Medical Leave of Absence

Purpose

The Medical Leave Absence Guideline is created to allow Volunteers a viable means to take time off from their duties and responsibilities to the Fire District during medical illnesses or injuries.

Scope

The Medical Leave of Absence Guideline is created to provide a viable, consistent means to the Fire District for dealing with work time loss of Volunteers in cases involving illness or injury.

Responsibility

It shall be the responsibility of all District personnel to ensure that the intent of this order be followed.

Procedure

A medical leave of Absence will be automatically activated when a Volunteer receives an injury requiring a physician’s attention.

The taking of prescribed medications that may cause impaired judgment or abilities, or have manufacturer recommendations not to operate equipment will also constitute a full medical leave.

Any injury or illness determined by a physician to cause limited or conditional release will automatically activate a full medical leave. The medical leave will remain in effect until such time as the physician provides a full written medical release, or the Fire Chief can satisfy a limited or conditional release with an altered work status.

Any illness or injury affecting a Volunteers ability to perform in a normal capacity must be reported to the Fire District within twenty-four (24) hours.

The Fire Chief, at his/her discretion, may invoke and/or terminate Medical Leave of Absence in order to minimize injury or jeopardy to the Volunteer and minimize liability to the Fire District.

Violation of this policy is subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination covered in the disciplinary action SOG.
