Live Fire Instructor Requirements

Purpose

This Live Fire Instructor Requirement guideline is created to provide minimum qualification requirements for instructors at live fire training exercises.

Scope

The Live Fire Instructor Requirement guideline is intended to provide all District personnel with consistent means of determining eligibility for live fire training instructors.

Responsibility

It is the responsibility of all Fire District personnel to ensure that the intent of this order be followed.

Procedure

Instructors for all live fire training shall have the following qualifications and have prior approval from District’s Division Chief of Training:

  1. NFPA Instructor I
  2. Knowledge of radio procedures – the ability to give commands in understandable language and properly interpret received messages
  3. Knowledge of RIT operations and tools
  4. Knowledge of Thermal Imaging Camera operations, uses, and limitations
  5. Knowledge of building construction – Thorough knowledge of building construction and its impact on firefighting operations
  6. Train the trainer – candidates must have been trained by a recognized live fire instructor on the methods of instructing others during live fire drills. This includes instruction on how to properly teach the following:
    1. all phases of fire progression
    2. methods of extinguishment
    3. opening closed doors and room searches
    4. nozzle patterns and how to apply water
    5. PASS alarms
    6. rescue tools
    7. accountability systems
    8. ventilation methods
    9. salvage and overhaul

Violation of this policy is subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination covered in the disciplinary action SOG.
